Newport Liberal Democrats have announced that Councillor Thomas Janke and local campaigner Sarah Syrda will be standing in May's local elections to represent Newport South & East.

Councillor Thomas Janke, a 2003 Iraq war veteran, already sits on the Town Council (South Ward), but feels that a seat on the borough Council will help him to achieve more for Newport. "Although we have made a great start towards sorting out problems such as parking in Newport, I am finding a lot of the decisions we need are at the borough level," Councillor Janke said. "Being on the borough Council will mean I can get more done, faster".

Sarah Syrda, is standing for the borough Council because she is tired of Councillors who are out of touch with Newport's needs. "We only hear from them when an election is close," Sarah said. "Too many councillors are out-of touch. Newport needs local representatives who understand the problems. We live here and battle with the same issues in our daily lives."

Thomas and Sarah will be joined by Newport disability rights campaigner Nick Garvey who will stand in the North and West Ward. Chetwynd Aston's David Ellams will be representing the party in the Church Aston & Lilleshall ward.

A manifesto will be launched in April against the backdrop of the party fielding its largest number of candidates in any local elections in recent times. To help support us by volunteering in the local elections, please click here
