Newport Liberal Democrats Hit Back Over Police Campaign

February 27, 2019 3:03 PM

Newport Liberal Democrats have hit back at Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner John's Campion's claim that their campaign for more bobbies on the beat in Newport is "dangerously misleading". Councillor Thomas Janke

Liberal Democrat Councillor Thomas Janke issued the following statement this afternoon:

"We stand by our petition for more bobbies on the beat in Newport. This is not a political stunt - as a local councillor and a Newport resident, I am sick and tired of Newport getting the thin end of the wedge. We have used documented figures for bobbies on the beat, and these chime with concerns I hear from residents on the doorstep day-in-day-out. It's telling that the Conservative PCC is dismissive of this petition. I now request a meeting with John Campion to discuss Newport's concerns. I also urge residents to show Mr Campion how we feel about this, and sign the online petition. We demand better for Newport, and we will keep fighting for our town and its residents."

The figures cited in the petition, showing West Mercia has second lowest number of bobbies on the beat per head of population, are based on analysis of official Home Office figures by the Sunday Times and reported in the Shropshire Star.
