Telford & Wrekin Liberal Democrats

  1. We demand further investment in our borough

  • Liberal Democrats believe we have to invest in Telford and Wrekin to improve local services and make it a better place to live for all. We are proud of our voting record to support the economic growth of our borough. We will continue to work cross-party to ensure pragmatic and sensible decisions are made, that put residents first and not party politics, to take our town forward.
  • Our town needs investment in infrastructure, not just more houses. We support the introduction of the Community Infrastructure Levy in Telford. This will enable the council to charge developers a levy and spend the money on much needed local infrastructure. Priorities for infrastructure spending include better roads, community centres and schools.
  1. We demand we save our A & E and Women & Children's Centre

  • We believe the Council, working with the community, must do all it can to prevent the closure of the Accident & Emergency Department and the Women and Children's Centre at PRH. We support cross-party efforts to oppose the Future Fit proposals.
  • If necessary, the Council should be prepared to seek a judicial review of the closure decision taken under the Future Fit programme.
  1. We demand greater prosperity for all

  • We will fight against cuts to the services our residents rely on, whether these cuts are implemented by central government or the Council. It is particularly important that our most vulnerable residents, including older people, are protected.
  • The prosperity of residents is directly affected by increases in Council Tax. Whilst we must invest in, and avoid cuts to, the services people rely on, we will constantly scrutinise value for money within the council to ensure that Council Tax is as low as possible.
  • We will protect our high streets, encouraging "shop local" initiatives
  • We will promote sustainable local businesses by fighting for reduced business rates and initiatives to support pop ups and independent shops.
  1. We demand we protect our local environment

  • Protecting our environment is at the heart of our Liberal Democrat philosophy - and we have worked hard to put our principles into practice.
  • We demand that the Council introduces a plan to phase out its use of single use plastics over the next four years, and encourages businesses in the borough to do the same.
  • We will promote the adoption of Neighbourhood Development Plans across the borough to ensure that planning is informed by local priorities, and cherished green spaces are protected.
  • We support the establishment of new nature reserves in the borough.
  1. We demand more power to the people

  • Liberal Democrat councillors work with people for the greater good of our communities. We believe part of the role of a councillor is to keep in touch with residents all year round, not just at election time.
  • We demand more power for people, with democratic local government exercising greater control over the resources it needs, and our communities able to take charge of aspects of their own local development - through, for example, establishing local banks, community energy cooperatives and tenants' management of social housing, and playing a full part in local planning decisions
